Millions willingly poured ice water down their shirts to raise awareness for ALS. Will those Americans also drop and give military veterans 22 push ups?

Following the lead of the viral Ice Bucket Challenge, an organization called 22Kill is asking America to attempt the 22 Push Up Challenge to honor those who serve. The project is also raising awareness about veteran suicide prevention.

The rules are simple and flexible. Once one person is challenged, they have 22 hours to upload a video of themselves doing pushups to honor veterans. If they use the #22Kill hashtag and share the video to social media, their pushups will be tallied on the 22Kill website. The ultimate goal is to reach a total 22 million pushups.

About 22 military veterans commit suicide everyday. Posting push up videos online can help spread the word about various veteran resources that can prevent suicide. It’s also a more concrete way to show your gratitude for the U.S. military than a simple ‘thank you for your service.’

As of this posting, the organization has already accumulated 4.5 million push ups.

The 22Kill site makes it clear that anyone can participate regardless of physical condition:

Every pushup counts so don’t be shy to show your support for our veterans. You can do as many or few pushups as you can or choose. Whether it’s 1 or 100 in a row, we will accept them however they come. They can be assisted (on your knees), incline (on a desk/wall), or if you physically are unable to do any, we’ll even take air pushups.

Here’s how you can get involved in the 22 Push Up Challenge:

  1. Record a video of yourself doing push ups. 22Kill encourages participants to do their pushups in a group or in a creative way in order to stand out.
  2. Upload the video online, either directly on a 22Kill social media page or on your own feed.
  3. Add the #22kill hashtag and how many pushups you did so it’s picked up by 22Kill’s counter.
  4. Post it!
  5. Challenge someone else to keep the cycle going!
