The golden age of unregulated drone ownership is over. In an unprecedented announcement, the Federal Aviation Administration said that it is now a legal requirement for all owners of unmanned aircraft to register their devices with the federal government.

This includes all drones, from the one that delivers your Amazon packages to your front door to the one that you bought your kid for Christmas. The rule will go into effect on Dec. 21 when the FAA’s new website for drone registration–the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS)–goes live.

“Make no mistake: unmanned aircraft enthusiast are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “Registration gives us an opportunity to work with these users to operate their unmanned aircraft safely. I’m excited to welcome these new aviators into the culture of safety and responsibility that defines American innovation.”

If you owned a drone before the Dec. 21 cut off, you have until Feb. 19, 2016 to fill out the necessary paperwork. After that date, all drones must display a Certificate of Aircraft registration before they fly. If you register after the Feb. 19 deadline, you will also be charged $5.
