When an air show as elaborate and renowned as the Air Force’s Freedom’s Call Tattoo is rained out, the financial losses can be staggering.

Freedom’s Call was canceled last June due to threatening thunderstorms and inclement weather. According to Air Force figures, the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base event cost taxpayers $33,000 and sponsors $65,000 to prepare. That’s a total $98,000 down the storm drain.

If Freedom’s Call had taken place, as many as 50,000 spectators would have enjoyed aerial flyovers, country music performances and a fireworks display.

In 2012 a similar storm during the event blew down tents and injured six people, so it was no surprise that the Air Force decided to err on the side of caution.

While we couldn’t enjoy the Freedom’s Call Tattoo this year, let’s remember its past highlights. Here’s a clip of an F-22 and F-15 fly by during the 2010 festival.

And here’s a rousing mashup of ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘God Bless America’ performed by USAF Band of Flight in 2011.
